PURPOSE:To attain emphasis of profile of picture without generating grain noise by applying a density level correction for the profile emphasis to a noted picture element only when the density level difference between the noted picture element and the picture element at the surrounding of the said picture element is a prescribed value or over. CONSTITUTION:ROMs 17, 21 discriminate whether or not the density level difference between the noted picture element and that around the sais picture element is a prescribed value, and apply the density level correction for the profile emphasis only to the noted picture element having the density level difference being a prescribed value or over. Thus, minute change in the density is not emphasized, allowing to prevent the generation of grain noise and the disturbance at the boundary of lines. Since the ROMs 17, 18 apply the density level correction for the profile emphasis in both main and subscanning line directions to the noted picture element, the effect of the profile emphasis is attained to a line in an optional direction on the picture. Since the reflection factor/density conversion to compensate the photoelectric converting characteristic of an image sensor 11 is done by a converting circuit 14 before the processing of profile emphasis, inconvenience with different application of profile emphasis depending on the density is avoided. |
