摘要 This magnetic head makes use of the magnetic reluctance effect of a ferromagnetic thin film, and is employed for the reproduction of signals on a magnetic recording medium such as magnetic tape. The operating point of a ferromagnetic thin film can be set to an optimum value without employing any external magnetic bias means, so that a reproduction output with less secondary distortion can be obtained. On at least one surface of a ferromagnetic thin film (5, 14) possessing the magnetic reluctance effect, stripes of irregularities are formed at an inclination with respect to the direction of a current flowing through the ferromagnetic thin film. In consideration of the diamagnetic field at the end portions of the ferromagnetic thin film, the angle between the current direction and the stripes of irregularities is selected to be between 60 and 80<o>. The stripes of irregularities generate an anisotropic magnetic field by their geometrical anisotropy in the ferromagnetic thin film in the direction parallel to the irregularities, enabling the setting of the ferromagnetic thin film at the optimum bias point. On either side of the ferromagnetic thin film, a highly permeable substrate (3, 12) and a magnetic shield film (7) acting as shield layers are each provided over non-magnetic insulators (4, 13, 16).
