[Also in Division F2] A fifth wheel coupling, Fig. 1 (not shown), comprises a service pipe coupling part 10 provided with an air hose connector 14 and mounted on a plate 12 beneath the trailer so that a spigot portion 17, Fig. 3, movable against a spring 19 may engage within a second pipe coupling or socket part 11 mounted on a frame 26 on the tractor. The socket 11 is provided with a spring-pressed frusto conical valve 34 which is unseated on coupling by a pin 25 in the spigot 17, the spigot being suitably sealed by engaging a soft flexible ring 33a and a hard ring 33 when the parts 10 and 11 engage. Finger elements 21 centralize the part 10, and a shoulder 20 engages the mounting plate 12 when the pipe couplings are disengaged. Flaps 29 are provided to prevent ingress of dirt through the opening 28. The male member may have a limited amount of lateral mobility.and electrical contacts (44), Fig. 2 (not shown), are also provided on the beams (41), (43) of the pivotal unit of the trailer and on the tractor. |
