PURPOSE:To obtain an optical fiber having high durability and less transmission loss by forming successively a coating layer consisting of a metal and a glassy coating layer on an optical fiber strand. CONSTITUTION:A base material 1 for an optical fiber strand of a large diameter having a core and clad is drawn to a fine wire under heating with a heater 2, thereby forming an optical fiber strand 3. The strand 3 is conducted into a CVD device 4. A metal is coated on the strand 3 by the device 4 to form the 1st coating layer. A colloid 5 obtd. by hydrolysis of metal alcoholate and/or metallic acid ester is coated on the above-described 1st coating layer by an applicator 6 for coating. The coated film is dehydrated and sintered by a baking furnace 7 to form the glassy 2nd coating layer. A metal coated optical fiber 8 formed thereon with the 1st and the 2nd coating layer in the above-mentioned way is taken up, via a take-off 9, on a take-up bobbin 10. |
