The title compds. (I; X,Y=H, C1) were prepd. directly from β-picoline by reaction with C1 and HF in the gas phase at 300-600≦̸C, optionally in the presence of A1, Cr, Fe, Ni, Co, or Mn fluorides as catalysts and/or as diluents. Thus, a mixt. of β-picoline and CCl4 was heated in a steel tube at 230≦̸C, followed by introduction of C1 and HF, pre-heated to 300≦̸C, and then by heating the whole to 430≦̸C to give 33.2% I (X=H; Y=C1), 10.7% I (X=C1; Y=H), and 16.6% I (X=Y=C1).
