1,068,277. Bearings. MAGNETFABRIK BONN G.m.b.H. Oct. 29, 1965 [Oct. 30, 1964], No. 45995/65. Heading F2A. A bearing comprises a diamagnetic body suspended in an inhomogeneous magnetic field, the body being magnetically anisotropic. A supporting or guiding force exerted by an inhomogeneous magnetic field on a diamagnetic body which is formed from magnetically anisotropic parts, is greater than when the parts are arranged in a disordered manner. The diamagnetic body may comprise a hexagonal crystal or crystals which have the hexad axis or axes coinciding with the direction of the magnetic field, and may be in the form of a ring having a rectangular or trapezoidal cross-section or having a combination rectangular and trapezoidal cross-section. The diamagnetic body may be made of graphite and may be pressed from graphite powder, with or without a binder, a magnetic field being present during the pressing. In an embodiment, a diamagnetic ring (2), Fig. 3 (not shown), is composed of graphite crystals having their hexad axes (1) radially directed and is disposed in an inhomogeneous ring-shaped field having an outer pole (3) and an inner pole (4). The ring (2) is connected to a spindle (5) by a non-magnetic disc (6) and the magnetic field is maintained by a permanent magnet (7). In another embodiment, a graphite ring (9), Fig. 4 (not shown), is disposed in an inhomogeneous field of a magnet (8), the crystals of the ring (9) have their hexad axes (1) vertical, the ring (9) is connected to a spindle (11) by a disc (12), and the ring (9) is centred by the magnetic field so as to guide the spindle (11). |
