A code converter having 32 inputs corresponding to the 32 combinations of the CCITT alphabet No. 2, i.e. to a "normal" alphabet, comprises means for delivering outputs on only 26 leads, i.e. a "reduced" alphabet. This is done by rearranging the characters in the 32 upper and 32 lower case character positions and by eliminating certain functions such that all necessary functions and characters are contained in 26 upper case and 26 lower case positions. In Fig. 4, each 5-bit character in CCITT No. 2 from tape reader 1 is converted at 2 to a corresponding marking on one of 32 leads. Various of these leads are interconnected by switches, as shown, to feed 26 output leads 5. A relay arrangement 3 controls the various switches in response to signals on certain of the 32 leads. It also controls the tape reader so that, when the reader inputs a character which is represented in the reduced alphabet by a character in a different case, the reader is stopped while a case shift signal and the reduced alphabet character are passed to output 5. The 26 leads 5 may feed a tape punch which records the reduced alphabet message. They may also feed a normal teleprinter which includes a code converter, Fig. 2 (not shown), for returning the data to normal alphabet, switches in the converter being controlled by reduced alphabet case shift signals. |
