A process for the preparation of phenyl 1-hydroxynaphthalene- 2-carboxylate by reaction of 1-hydroxynaphthalene-2-carboxylic acid with phenol, in which the reaction is carried out in an organic, aromatic, water-immiscible solvent in the presence of thionyl chloride and a catalytic amount of an organic nitrogen compound, then the organic solvent is partially removed by distillation, and the phenyl 1-hydroxynaphthalene-2-carboxylate formed is separated by addition of an alkanol of 1 to 6 C atoms and isolated in a customary manner. The product is obtained, avoiding a large excess of phenol, in very good yield and in high purity suitable for further use as an intermediate for dyes in the photographic industry.
