In the process, the running yarn is subjected to an adjustable normal force, the tensile force caused by this force is determined, and the difference between the running speeds before and after the loading is ascertained, and this is converted into electrical quantities which define the normal force, the tensile force and the stretching of the yarn. The apparatus contains a motor control part (20) for controlling a motor (22) in order to draw off the yarn, a yarn-tension measuring device (8), by means of which the normal force is applied and the tensile force is determined, and a yarn-stretch measuring device (23), by means of which the difference between the running speeds is ascertained. The running speed, tensile force, normal force and stretching are indicated in indicator units (27-29). So that the difference between the running speeds, which is a measure of the stretching, can be indicated over the entire range of rotation, for example a 20-step control switch (24) having three potentiometers (R1 R2 R3) is provided. The initial resistance values of those devices ascertaining the running speeds before and after the loading are thus matched to the regulating resistance value of the motor speed. <IMAGE>
