Insulating glass units having at least two panes spaced apart from each other with the formation of an intermediate space are used to an ever-increasing extent for outside glazings, rather than being used in window frames, such as, for instance, in roof glazings as well as glazings for greenhouses, conservatories and the like. The problem arises here that the sealing and packing materials which hold the two or more panes spaced apart from each other are open to the elements, particularly irradiation by the sun, and are thereby destroyed. In order to prevent the destruction of these sealing and packing materials (7,9), a cover layer (12) of enamel is applied to the edge region of at least one pane (3), which layer protects the sealing and packing materials (7,9).
