Using the cutting punches (9) of a cutting tool, thick-walled (21) and profiled workpieces (6), such as, for example, gearwheels brought to the final or intermediate shape by deep drawing, are to be cut to length in a first and in a second cutting operation or separated from the bottom (11) required for the drawing operation. In the first cutting operation, four tabs (20) are punched out and bent inwards into the workpiece cavity to an extent such that they do not hinder the second cutting operation serving to effect separation in the wall regions (28).
