The heat transfer effectiveness of a reactor (10) is determined by measuring (42, 44) the input temperature (TC1) and flow rate (Fc) of coolant flowing to the reactor (10), utilising temperature values for reactant and effluent from the reactor (10) in a relationship to obtain a value for the log mean temperature different ( DELTA Tm) across the reactor, and calculating the actual heat transfer coefficient (U) for heat transfer surfaces (A) of the reactor as a function of the log mean temperature difference ( DELTA Tm), the heat transfer area (A), the coolant flow rate (Fc) and additional constant factors which are characteristics of the coolant. |
