The invention relates to a process for cleaning the pipetting apparatus of sample distribution units and analysis units, which is attached to a pump system which is connected to an inert liquid source and via which liquids to be distributed are sucked in and delivered in a metered fashion. In order to be able to recover the inert liquid to a large extent, a quantity of the liquid which is to be distributed is sucked in, which quantity is larger than the total reference quantity to be delivered, and after the distribution of the total reference quantity to be delivered, the residual quantity of liquid still present in the pipetting apparatus is delivered, together with a flushing quantity of inert liquid, to a regenerating vessel.
