The invention relates to a tape reel for the edge-aligned winding and unwinding of metal or steel tape onto and/or from a bundle, comprising a horizontal winding shaft which has a winding spindle for the bundle and is rotatably mounted in a machine tool table, a drive coupled with the winding shaft and devices to permit displacement of the bundle at right angles to the direction of movement of the tape during winding or unwinding. The invention is characterised in that the whole reel with its set of gears and motor is no longer displaceably arranged on a slide as has been usual hitherto, but only the winding shaft with the winding spindle is displaceable, with the gears possibly also being displaceable, like a rider, on the shaft in the form of a slip-on gear mechanism. This simplifies the design and masses are kept low, which substantially reduces the inertia of the system.
