In a method and device for controlling a robot or other automation device, a touching unit whose signal is transmitted via a fibre-optic cable and picked up and analysed by sensors is arranged on the robot. Control signals for actuating means of the robot are derived from this analysis. The use of fibre-optic means results in a low weight and insensitivity to disturbances, and also safety against explosion. <IMAGE>
