PURPOSE:To obtain a Michael addition product useful as an intermediate for synthesizing fragrant substance, etc. in a short time in high yield, by reacting an alpha, beta-unsaturated carbonyl compound with an active methylene compound in the presence of a basic catalyst with controlling the reaction temperature. CONSTITUTION:1mol alpha, beta-unsaturated carbonyl compound such as 2-pentylcyclopentenone, etc. is reacted with preferably 1-2mol active methylene compound such as a diester, e.g., dimethyl malonate, etc. preferably in an inert solvent in the presence of a basic catalyst such as sodium methylate, etc. at 10-60 deg.C, preferably 20-60 deg.C. After the reaction reaches an equilibrium state, the temperature in the reaction system is dropped to -30-20 deg.C, preferably -15-5 deg.C continuously or intermittently, to give a Michael addition product such as 2-n-pentyl- 3-oxo-cyclopentylmalonic acid dimethyl ester, etc. |
