In a device for the automatic removing and stacking of e.g. sewn workpieces from a sewing machine, the workpiece 2 is removed from a clamp 78, Fig. 2, by transfer means 8 on to a horizontal pick-up gate 1, 3, which is actuated to move in a rectangular path to deposit said workpiece on a stack 5 in a magazine 4, 6. As described, stack 5 rests laterally against a gate 6. The pick-up gate 1, 3 is moved in vertical and horizontal directions by compressed-air cylinders 42 and 30, respectively; the transfer means 8 is moved horizontally by a cylinder 10 which is pivotably movable in a vertical plane by a cylinder 25, so that the gripping means 16 can be lowered on to the workpiece 2. Although raisable by cylinder 42, the pick-up 1 falls under gravity and downward movement can be limited by the action of a braking cylinder (59), Fig. 5 (not shown), frictionally on a rod 37. In operation, see also Figs. 7-10 (not shown), the means 8 transfers the workpiece on to the rods 3 of pick-up 1 which is then allowed to fall to rest on stack 5; electromagnetic control means then actuates braking-cylinder 59 to limit vertical movement and cylinder 30 to move pick-up 1 laterally towards the right, whereby the workpiece is deposited on stack 5. The pick-up 1 is subsequently raised and moved back to the left to receive the next workpiece.
