PURPOSE:To provide the titled compsn. capable of providing a liq. crystal display element exhibiting rapid response and suitable for use in a birefringent display element by making use of two polarizing plates, which comprises a particular chiral smectic liq. crystal compd. as an essential component. CONSTITUTION:At least two kinds of chiral smectic liq. crystal compds. having a smectic A phase on the high-temp. side of a chiral semctic C phase of formula I [wherein m and n are each an integer of 1 or 2; R is a 1-18C alkyl or alkoxy group; Y is an alkyl, alkoxy, or alkanoyl(oxy) group having an asymmetric carbon atom; and X is a group of formulae II-V, etc. or a single bond] [e.g., compd. of formula VI (wherein * is an asymmetric carbon atom)] are incorporated in an amt. of 50-100wt%.
