A method for producing a homogeneous collagen composition, which comprises providing an air-free fibrillated collagen slurry under pressure, providing an air-free swelling agent under pressure, the pressures being sufficient to simultaneously feed the collagen slurry and the swelling agent into a mixing zone, mixing under pressure the collagen slurry and swelling agent and subjecting the mixture to a shearing action while said mixture is passed through the mixing zone, and discharging the resulting homogeneous swollen collagen composition from the mixing zone. The collagen may be from a conventional source, as a 3 to 15% by weight suspension. The pressure applied to the reservoirs of collagen and swelling agent may be 30 to 80 p.s.i.g. The swelling agent may be dilute hydrochloric, lactic or acetic acid or sodium hydroxide, or a dilute salt solution. An apparatus suitable for carrying out the process of the invention comprises a cylindrical housing having at least two inlets at one end thereof, means for producing an air-free fibrillated collagen slurry under pressure, the pressure being at least sufficient to feed said slurry into the housing through one of said inlets, means for providing an air-free swelling agent under pressure, the pressure being at least sufficient to feed said swelling agent into the housing through another of said inlets, a cylindrical rotor rotatably mounted within the housing for mixing said collagen slurry and swelling agent, said rotor having a plurality of projections on at least part of its outer surface, the distance between the outer extremity of said projections and the inner wall of the cylindrical housing defining a passage for the mixture of collagen slurry and swelling agent, and an outlet at the other end thereof for discharging the resulting homogeneous swollen collagen composition from the housing. |
