[Also in Division A5] A process for the production of the 8-lactone of 5-hydroxy-7-decynoic acid comprises reacting 2 - (pentyn - 2<SP>1</SP>- yl) cyclopentanone with an aliphatic percarboxylic acid at a temperature of from 10‹ to 50‹ C. The percarboxylic acid may be performic acid, peracetic acid or perpropionic acid and may be present in excess up to 40 molar per cent. The #-lactone of 5-hydroxy-7-decenoic acid is obtained from the above #-lactone, prepared by the above process, by catalytic hydrogenation using a Lindlar catalyst. The use of palladium on calcium carbonate is exemplified. |
