The invention relates to the monitoring of public lighting equipment. Two boxes are supplied with the aid of DC/AC converters, the first supplying the lamp through the wires of the lamppost, so as to detect correct operation of the lamp. The second box includes a DC/DC converter 210, stepping the voltage up to 300 V. The voltage of 300 V is applied to the two input wires of the panel in order to test its electrical isolation 260. Next, the presence is detected of a current inrush followed by a current decay characteristic of a capacitor 261. Thereafter, the presence is detected of a current transfer across the panel in order to check the integrity of the ballast inductor 262. Finally, a circuit 263 checks the response of the starter which may possibly be present in response to alternating voltage pulses of about 300 V. <IMAGE>
