Method and apparatus for the manufacture of a high- strength material in sheet or web form. Manufacture of a high-strength plastic sheet consisting of the formation of a laminate of at least two layers of a thermoplastic polymer compound, composed of high- density, high molecular weight polyethylene and low- density relatively low molecular weight polyethylene, in which the layers have a fibrillated grain structure, which results in a prevailing cleavage direction in each layer, and in which the layers are joined to one another with the prevailing cleavage direction intersecting one another, and a biaxial orientation of the molecules in the layers by stretching of the layers in approximately uniaxial stages to convert the grain pattern of the polymer to a zigzag micro-pattern.
