Process for the application of a protective coating to metal components in plants for the treatment of liquids, such as sludge separators, hydrocarbon separators, starch separators, purification plants and the like, and the protective coating. According to the process a pickling by phosphating will be first of all applied to the components to be protected, followed by cleaning of the pickling residues by scrubbing or washing and, finally, application of an organic compound. The organic compound will be preferably a two-component polyurethane and, in the case of treatments of fats, it will be an epoxy pitch applied as two coats. The invention will find its application very particularly in the protection of liquid treatment plants such as purification stations and the like.
