PURPOSE:To prevent occurrence of fracture in a friction material by providing peripheral surfaces of a plate-shaped friction material with a layer containing high-strength bonding agent, thereby preventing rust generated from the peripheral part and concurrently reinforcing the peripheral part. CONSTITUTION:To fabricate this friction material for a car, a mixed material is fabricated first by thoroughly mixing both bonding material powder consisting of steel wool and phenol resin and a friction adjusting agent consisting of barium sulfate or graphite, using a Banbury mixer or a high-speed rotary machine. Then the mixed material is filled in a mould and pressed for preliminary formation to fabricate a roughly- formed mother material 2. Solution in which a bonding agent is dissolved, is applied to the peripheral surface of the roughly-formed material 2. The amount of solution applied should be about 10-75mg/cm<2>, in term of a solid-state binding agent. Next, the roughly-formed material whose peripheral surface 1 is coated with binding agent solution is placed in a heating mould, and it is heated and pressed for fusion reaction of the binding agent. Thus, a friction material formed in an integrated body can be fabricated. Accordingly, a layer 1 containing the high-strength bonding agent on the peripheral surface prevents generation of rust, and at the same time the mechanical strength of the peripheral surface is enhanced. Therefore, fracture in the friction material due to rust generation can be eliminated. |
