A device for removing closure caps from mouthpieces of upright containers, in particular bottles, is described, having at least one tubular tool, capable of being lowered, in a machine frame, onto at least one mouthpiece by means of a stroke drive, and also having a holding down device for the container, with a resilient stroke limit stop and centring ring held underneath the tool. To be able to remove the closure caps automatically, provision is made for a spike fixed to the tool to extend axially in the tube of the tool, aligned with the opening of the centring ring, and to have a downward-tapering lifter at the bottom end.
