In an electronic flash unit having rechargeable batteries, means (R1 and C1, D2, R4) are provided, by means of which the batteries (B) of the flash unit (6) can be charged via the terminals (3, 4), on the foot (9) of the flash unit, which are normally used for ignition. As a result, there is no need for an additional plug-and-socket device for the connection of a charger. The charger (7) is constructed in this case in such a way that the flash unit (6) can be plugged onto a base or shoe (8) corresponding to the flash terminal of the associated camera.
