Herbicidally active 1-amino-1,3,5-triazine-2,4-[1H,3H]diones of the general formula <IMAGE> are obtained by a novel process in high yields in the following ways: 1st step <IMAGE> 2nd step <IMAGE> 3rd step <IMAGE> In step 3, apart from by hydrolysis, the alkylidene protective group of the intermediates (V) can also be removed by transfer to isothiosemicarbazides of the formula <IMAGE> the starting substances (III) being obtained again. In the general formulae I-VI, the radicals R<1>, R<2>, R<3>, R<4> and X have the meanings given in the description.
