In a friction clutch the interengaging surfaces 30, 32 and 31, 33, Fig. 1, have recesses which hold fluid and provide a fluid coupling action as the clutch engages until the frictional engagement takes over. As shown in Fig. 1 the fluid is fed to the friction surfaces by centrifugal action through a conduit 36, 37 and is bled from the male member through small passages. In Fig. 2 the fluid is forced under pressure through conduits 36, 37a. Fig. 12 shows an embodiment in which the recesses are provided in friction plates 113, 114 and fluid is supplied through passages 122-124. In all the embodiments the clutches are hydraulically engaged and disengaged. |
