An improved process for preparation of 4,5-dichloro-1,2-dithia-cyclopenten-3-one of the formula <IMAGE> by reacting hexachloroprene with sulphur at elevated temperatures, wherein the improvement comprises hydrolyzing by-product sulphur chlorides by conducting the reaction in the presence of water.
