A fuel cell comprises a pair of microperforated metal electrode sheets 18, 20 of an iron-chromium alloy which define an electrolyte space 30 therebetween, pipes 26, 28 for supplying gases reactive with each other into mutual contact through the respective sheets, the perforations being such as to prevent the flow of electrolyte without substantially interfering with the flow of gases. The electrode sheets may be stainless steel, the anode 18 being nickel plated and then coated with platinum black in a polytetrafluoroethylene binder, the cathode being first plated with nickel and then silver. Electrode sheets of iron-chromium alloy of a thickness between 0À0005 and 0À005 inch having perforations of a size of a fraction of a micron to 40 microns and containing 5000 to 50,000 perforations per square inch can be formed by electrolytically dissolving the crystal grain boundary precipitates without affecting the initial thickness of the sheet. The reactive gases which are fed to gas spaces 14 and 16 may be hydrogen and oxygen, respectively and aqueous KOH electrolyte 32. A venting pipe 34 may be provided. Electrical terminals are constituted by tabs 36 and 38 which are integrally formed with electrodes 18 and 20. Polymerized tetrafluoroethylene plates 10 and 12 with electrodes 18, 20 thereon are assembled with an interposed rectangular frame member by screws 24.
