PURPOSE:To enable optical communication within a distance of several hundred meters with general-purpose LED emitting light of 650-660nm wavelength as a light source by forming a core with a copolymer of a styrene deriv. contg. fluorine with an alkyl methacrylate deriv. and a clad with a polymer having a lower refractive index than the copolymer. CONSTITUTION:A styrene deriv. contg. fluorine as one of the comonomers of a copolymer forming a core is represented by formula I (where X is F or D, when X is F, each of Y<1>, Y<2> and Y<3> is H or D or Y<1> is methyl or deuterated methyl and each of Y<2> and Y<3> is H or D, and when X is D, each of Y<1>, Y<2> and Y<3> is F). 2,3,4,5,6-Pentafluorostyrene or 2,3,4,5,6-pentafluoro-alpha,beta,beta- trideuterostyrene is preferably used as the styrene deriv. An alkyl methacrylate deriv. as the other of the comonomers is represented by formula II (where R1 is alkyl or fluoroalkyl, R2 is methyl or deuterated methyl and Z is H or D). Fluoroalkyl beta,beta-dideuteromethacrylate is preferably used as the alkyl methacrylate deriv. A clad may be formed with any transparent polymer having a lower refractive index than the copolymer forming the core. The polymer may be an alkyl methacrylate polymer contg. fluorine, a vinylidene fluoride- tetrafluoroethylene copolymer or a blend thereof. |
