Pulverulent coal is charged to the ovens of a coke battery through a transport main and valved branches feeding the individual ovens in a carrier gas, propulsion jets being spaced along the main to deliver carrier gas to the stream of coal and gas. Wet pulverulent coal from a hopper 24 is fed through a drier 21 past a gate 66 to a hot bin B to form a flowable mixture with steam or other carrier gas from an inlet 67. A gate 69 controls the flow of coal to a lower hot bin C where further steam from an inlet 71 is added to produce a fluent mixture. Under control of a gate 73 the coal passes through a crusher 74 and a transport container D to a main M. Steam is delivered to the main M by spaced jets arranged to deliver a fan of steam and carrier gas into the main M (Figs. 4 and 5, not shown), to propel the coal to one of the branches 122 leading to a coke oven. A programmer-controller E controls the drive for scrapers in the drier 21 to regulate the flow of coal. When a desired charge has been fed into bin B, the drier gate 66 is closed and the bin 69 opened to feed the charge to bin C. When bin C is filled to a predetermined level, gate 69 is closed and gate 73 leading to the metering crusher 74 opened. The steam valves controlling inlets 67 and 71 to bins B and C are also operated by the controller E. When gate 73 leading to the transport chamber D is opened, the crusher 74 is actuated and steam delivered to the transport jets. The rate of operation of crusher 74 is reduced if pressure in the chamber D rises above a predetermined level. The capacity of bin C is chosen to equal the desired charge of an oven, so that on bin C being emptied, the valve 123 controlling the branch of an oven which has just been charged is closed, and the cycle recommenced to charge a second oven. In a modification, the controller E operates to maintain a charge of coal in bin C and a continuous flow of coal is delivered to the main M. The valves 123 controlling the branches to the ovens are operated in a timed sequence to charge the ovens in turn. The drier, Fig. 7, comprises an open-topped casing with a series of staggered horizontal grate bars 29 above an outlet, and reciprocating scraper bars 28 operated by a rack-and-pinion 51, 52.
