The circuit, esp. for energy saving lamps which are smaller than previously used fluorescent lamps and which require more inductance for ignition, has two choke coils (3,4), an ignition capacitor (11) and a starter winding (13) operated in opposition to one of the choke windings in series with the ignition switch contact in the heating circuit. The capacitor is switched in parallel to this series arrangement so that with the start of ognition initiated by a switch contact (9) an oscillatory circuit is excited so that a pulse of energy results to ignite the lamp (7). The switch contact is a thermally operated rest contact and the switching device is a neon igniter with an operating contact. The ignition capacitor has a capacity between 15000 and 70000 pF. The starter winding increases the preheating current by 15 to 30%. A temp. sensitive resistance can be incorporated as a protection against overload. A heater (10) wire is in parallel with the switch contact (9).
