Process and plant for reducing the entrainment of fines of solid carbonaceous material in the tar-laden gases produced by a rotary oven during the gasification of coal or other carbonaceous material. The fines and the tar are separated from the gases and the fines from the tar. The separated fines are recycled by being mixed with the solid carbonaceous material and tar recycled in a screw conveyor 8 before this mixture is introduced into the oven 6. By virtue of the stirring produced in the conveyor 8, the tar coats the particles of entering material so that the fines adhere to the particles which are thus coated to form composite agglomerates which, after being introduced into the oven 6 by the conveyor 8, travel for a longer distance in the oven 6 from the gas outlet 17 than would independent fines, and this reduces the risk of their entrainment by the gas stream leaving before their gasification. <IMAGE>
