A paper feeding unit for a printer, copier or the like is specified which can be removed from the printer, copier or the like and does not require an electrical connection. The unit has a lifting plate for reception of a large number of sheets of paper placed on it, transfer rollers for transferring the paper sheets, a lifting motor for vertical movement of the lifting plate, sensors for detecting the position of the lifting plate, the format of the paper, the absence of sheets of paper etc., and a microcomputer for controlling the time it takes to transfer the sheets of paper. The unit makes continued copying or printing possible without frequent interruptions for refilling with paper sheets or because of the erroneous detection of an abnormal operating state.
