In the process, the liquid sludge is aerated with air and, during this, it is circulated and kept in a mesophilic or thermophilic temperature range. To avoid heat losses and maintain the necessary process temperatures without supplying external energy, it is proposed to carry out the aerobic treatment in at least two successive treatment reactors 1, 10, to pass fresh air to the first treatment reactor 1 via a fresh air feed line 6 and to pass at least some of the exhaust air from the first treatment reactor 1 via an exhaust air discharge line 7 to the second treatment reactor 10, or further treatment reactors. <IMAGE>
