A tubular film (11) coming from a film blowing device (10) is folded in at the sides by side wedges (13, 14) and laid flat as it passes through a roller arrangement (12). The laid-flat tubular film is provided with a longitudinal slit (17) by a cutting device (17') and subsequently folded around the longitudinal slit (17) in a folding station (18). The film stack (19), which at least partly comprises eight layers, is subsequently provided with a transverse welded seam in a welding station (26) and cut off. The protective cover resulting from this is unfolded by pulling the initially inner edges of the slit (17) outwards. A protective cover thus results having high tear strength at the transverse welded seam and with good seating ability on the object to be protected. <IMAGE> |
