The invention relates to a method and a device for winding core-less rolls (42) of paper or film-like web material (4), in which method a particularly high performance with fully automatic operation is achieved in that the web material (4) is secured at the start of winding on a winding mandrel (25) by means of suction and after the winding operation is complete is released as a finished roll (42) by reducing the outer diameter of the winding mandrel. The efficiency of such devices can be further significantly increased by the arrangement in each case of a plurality of identical winding units (11) on rotating and turning crosses (14) which are arranged each lying opposite one another in pairs on opposite sides of a machine frame (1), and the web material (4) at each winding station passes continuously from a laying-on position (A) via a winding position (B) into an ejection position (C) in which the winding mandrel (25) can be removed from the wound material, or ready-wound roll (42), by means of an automatic pull-out device (40), said roll then passing over an outlet path (12) for subsequent packaging. <IMAGE>
