In automatic text entry, the characters read by a character reader (5) can be reproduced on the display unit (22) of a data display device and can thus be checked by an operator. In the case of alphanumeric characters which are unambiguously identified by the character reader (5), the character reader (5) generates a character code by means of which the video section (19) is driven by a character generator (6). Unidentified characters (graphics characters) are written as bit patterns into a graphics store (18), the content of which is output for driving the video section (19) with simultaneous suppression of the output signals of the character generator (6). This type of representation results in a high resolution of the graphics characters and an ergonomically advantageous size ratio with respect to the alphanumeric characters. <IMAGE>
