Nitroimidazole compounds and compositions useful in the treatment of acne.

Metronidazole retinoate and mizonidazole retinoate, with the formula (I) which are new compounds, are useful in the treatment of acne by topical application. Pharmaceutical compositions comprising retinoic acid or a lower alkyl ester thereof and an ester of metronidazole or mizonidazole with an acid of formula RCOOH in which R is an aliphatic residue such that RCOOH is an aliphatic acid of 3 to 10 carbon atoms, are useful for the same purpose.
