Azetidinone mercury sulfides of formula …… wherein… n is 0 or 1,… X is chloro or bromo, and… R is hydrogen or a carboxylic acid ester protecting group, are prepared by the reaction of penicillin derived thiazoline-azetidinones of formula …… with a mercuric halide in the presence of an alcohol or glycol. They are useful intermediates in the preparation of cephalosporin compounds.
