Disclosed is a process for the preparation of p-nitrosodiphenylamine hydrochloride comprising reacting diphenylamine, C<Sub>5</Sub>C<Sub>10</Sub> alkyl nitrite and anydrous HCI in the presence of a C<Sub>5</Sub>-C<Sub>10</Sub> aliphatic alcohol and essentially in the absence of an aromatic solvent. The p-nitrosodiphenylamine hydrochloride may be converted to p-nitrosodiphenylamine which in turn may be hydrogenated to p-aminodiphenyi- amine.
