A battery charger, particularly suitable for NiCd batteries, supplies pulses of charging current to at least one battery connected to terminals 9-14, and discharges the battery between each charging pulse. The change in the battery terminal voltage over a predetermined period during each charging pulse is measured by voltage sampling circuitry connected to terminals 25-31, and the pulse charging is terminated when a parameter of the measured voltage change exhibits a predetermined characteristic. Pulse charging may be terminated as a result of the measured voltage change exceeding a predetermined threshold or as a result of the detection of a point of inflexion in the variation of measured voltage change with time. The charge-discharge cycle is controlled by switching transistors 16-19. LED's 21, 22, 40, 41 indicate progress and completion of charging. The charging current may be modified in dependence on internal battery temperature, and a microprocessor is used for overall control. <IMAGE> |
