The locomotive has a pair of pick- ups 14,15 in engagement with DC supply conditions 12,13, and a compound DC motor with an armature A and series winding Se connectable between the pick-ups and a shunt winding Sh supplied by an on board DC source 16. A switching arrangement is responsive to a warning signal (low voltage DC or information-carrying AC) on the conductors and indicative of the polarity of the DC to be applied to such conductors to so connect the armature and series winding in circuit with the pick-ups for the appropriate direction of rotation when the DC voltage is applied. The locomotive is then accelerated by increasing the applied DC voltage. The motor is braked regeneratively, a series field bypass circuit R2, D3 being provided for this purpose. <IMAGE> |
