A box-section railway track crossing having its top wall grooved to provide the running surfaces is formed by welding a steel base plate 5 to the central open-bottomed portion of a manganese steel casting 1, the casting comprising a central portion of inverted channel section having cross ribs 2, 6, and end portions 11, 12 forming base plate extensions integral with marginal strips 3, 4. Welded-on rail-junction inserts 10 are located by shoulders 15 and by seating and guiding formations on the extensions 11, 12. Each insert 10 changes in section along its length from the contour 18 of an ordinary flange rail and at its inner end may have the section either of an inverted channel, Fig. 5 (not shown), or of a cut-off rail, Fig. 11 (not shown).</p> |
