Cunningham Title: ELECTRICALLY DRIVEN IMPACT TOOL AND METHOD OF OPERATING THE SAME One or both of a pair of oppositely rotating bodies, such as motor driven flywheels, are mounted for pivotal movement against the side of a ram. One or more tension rods connect pivot shafts or members for equalizing precession and similar forces of the rotating bodies, rather than the housing. Pulsed solenoids produce force increased by a force multiplying device, such as pivoted links or a cable arrangement which has greatest mechanical advantage when the solenoid pull is weakest at the start, but decreases as the solenoid pull increases. The ram has an entrance taper on one or both sides. The ram is returned by a nylon sheathed bundle of elastomer cords which are looped around the ram from both sides and stretch proportionally along their length. Removable guide rods engage holes in the side wings of the ram. A safety device is actuated by a rod, moved through engagement with the work piece, for closing a safety switch in the solenoid circuit. Alternatively, a block engages a ram wing to prevent an impact stroke, but is removed by a similar rod. Alternatively, a stop block is placed between the motor housings to prevent movement of the flywheels against the ram until the work piece is engaged and a similar rod moves a spring pressed pivoted link to withdraw the stop block.</p> |
