Homo and copolymers of vinyl chloride and compositions containing these polymers are stabilized against light and heat by the addition of 0.05 to 5% by weight of a compound obtained by reacting RSn Hal3, where R is a monovalent alkyl radical containing not more than 20 carbon atoms and Hal is chlorine, bromine or iodine with an equivalent amount of a mixture of an alkali metal sulphide with either an aliphatic alkali metal mercaptide or with an alkali metal salt of a mono or polycarboxylic acid. In the examples, montan wax is also added.ALSO:A stabilizer for homo- or co-polymers of vinyl chloride is obtained by reacting RSnX3 where X =chlorine, bromine or iodine and R is a monovalent organic radical with not more than 20 carbon atoms with an equivalent amount of a mixture of an alkali metal sulphide with an aliphatic alkali metal mercaptide or with an alkali metal salt of a mono- or poly-carboxylic acid. The reaction is carried out in aqueous solution or in the presence of an organic solvent at a temperature between 20 DEG and 100 DEG C. The tin compound contains an aliphatic, cycloaliphatic, araliphatic or aromatic radical and is preferably a chloride. The other compounds are preferably sodium salts, the mercaptide having less than 20 carbon atoms and the carboxylic acid having at least one carboxylic acid group attached to a saturated hydrocarbon radical, or to a hydrocarbon radical containing at least one carbon-carbon double bond and not more than 20 carbon atoms. Many examples of suitable compounds are given. |
