Pyrolysis between 600 and 1000 degrees C of mixture containing 5-99% aromatics having 6-13C, for time sufficient to convert non-aromatics to aromatics of lower boiling range. Then 0.1-1 pbw. of water is introduced. Boiling range of components of mixture is between 70 and 260 degrees C. Mixtures covered by claims are formed as by-products in petrochemical industry, in ethylene manufacture, as well as in coke manufacture. Hitherto several complicated operations required to separate them, a source of relatively pure hydrogen was required and non-aromatic hydrocarbons were converted to methane. Suitable starting mixture would be: 50-95% aromatic hydrocarbons, 0-15% C5 hydrocarbons and 5-50% non-aromatic hydrocarbons.
