In the method, dimensional information for free travel movements and machining feeds of the working cycle of each tool is predetermined. For the processing of the movements of the tool (21, 22) and its return into the initial position, the value of the free travel (A1, A2) of the tool up to the machining area and the size of its machining area (Z1, Z2) are predetermined. Here, the origin (O1, O2) of coordinates for each working cycle of each tool is made to coincide with the start of the machining area of a corresponding surface of the workpiece (1). During the return of the tool slide into the initial position, a count-down of the coordinate values of the machining feed and of the free travel of the tool is carried out. At the end of each working cycle, the exactness of the movements of the tool is checked by reading a permissible error value of the movements. The method is intended for use in automated systems for metal-cutting machines by means of program control. <IMAGE>
