The combustion device has a porous burner head (1) with a vaporiser part (1a), which burner head can contain the fuel in the liquid phase, with a first combustion chamber (10) into which the vaporiser part protrudes, and with a second combustion chamber (11) which is adjacent in the direction of flow and is connected to the first one. The fuel contained in the burner head is vaporised in order to burn with the air fed to the first combustion chamber. The ratio of the air feed rate to the first combustion chamber relative to the vaporisation rate of the fuel is adjusted to the range from 0.1 to 0.5 of the equivalent stoichiometric ratio, in order to obtain an infinitely adjustable heat output and at the same time to maintain clean combustion. <IMAGE>
